Temporary Kitchen: A Kitchen Renovation’s Best Friend
Renovating your kitchen can be a stressful process. Your mind is filled with questions about backsplash colors, appliance options, and cabinet hardware, and before you know it the renovation will be underway.
However, before your renovation begins, you’re going to need to set up a temporary kitchen. This is going to serve as your food storage, food preparation and clean up area. Your temporary kitchen should be in a place of easy access and somewhere that doesn't interfere with the construction. During Gail's renovation, she set up her temporary kitchen in the laundry room (having a sink in her laundry room was an added bonus!) The dining room is another area that is often used for this purpose.
Permanent Tips For Your Temporary Kitchen:
1. A food prep area is essential for your temporary kitchen, no matter how small or what it's made of. In Gail's space, she used an old fold up camping table. You can feel free to get as creative as you need to!
2. Toaster ovens are going to be your new best friend. Make sure to get one that's oversized so you can roast veggies and heat up dishes. Large toaster ovens will be able to heat up more than one portion size at a time, making meals for the family much quicker.
3. A single burner induction cooktop was Gail's number one purchase for her kitchen renovation. Having the ability to actually cook meals instead of reheat was a life saver. It also gives you some flexibility in terms of food preparation. If you run out of home cooked meals you've got the ability to whip up some more instead of going for expensive takeout.
4. Sink in your laundry room? If you're lucky enough to have one, why not make use of it? The water in your kitchen will be shut off during the renovation but the laundry room is fair game! Use your small sink to wash fresh vegetables and clean the occasional kitchen utensil. (Paper plates and plastic forks will be your new kitchen staple)
5. Microwaves are an everyday convenience that changed the game for quick meals back in the 1950s. If you don't already have one, a microwave will be perfect for you on busy nights between work and play, even after the renovation.
6.Any extra cabinets or storage space will be useful during the renovation. Gail made some room in one of her laundry cabinets to create a makeshift pantry.
While kitchen renovations can be stressful, having a temporary kitchen will save you a lot of trouble and money. Having a toaster oven, a small cooktop, and a fold up prep table will be your key to the perfect makeshift kitchen until your renovation is complete.
