5 Things to Consider When Designing Your Kitchen Island

designing your kitchen island

What does your dream kitchen include?

Chances are, you said an island. It seems like everyone wants one of these freestanding counters in their kitchen, and often for the same reason: additional workspace.

A kitchen island, however, can serve as so much more than a surface for mixing bowls. When designed with intention, an island can exceed your expectations and make your entire kitchen more functional and fabulous.

Here are five things we recommend thinking about as you bring your dream kitchen island to life:

#1: Function

How do you envision using your kitchen island? Do you need an additional seating area, or do you want to create more space for food prep? Do you do a lot of entertaining, or is your focus a kid-friendly space? Will you need lighting? How about outlets?

Make sure you understand how you want your island to work within your kitchen before you begin designing it.

#2: Appliances

Adding appliances to an island can drastically improve the flow of a kitchen. Consider both the practical and wish-list items that would work well in your space, such as:

  • Microwave
  • Prep Sink
  • Steam Oven
  • Pull Out Freezer
  • Dishwasher
  • Pull Out Trash

#3: Storage

Most people think about the counter space that islands add, but forget to consider the storage potential. Does your island need to hold small yet bulky appliances, like blenders and bread makers? Do you have a large collection of holiday dishware or family heirlooms that need a home? What about baking supplies?

Consider including storage in your island for the items that seem to get in the way in your current kitchen, as well as for items that aren’t easily accessible right now.

#4: Shape & Fit

Function is important, but so is form. Combine these two as you think about how the island will fit with the rest of your kitchen:

  • What size island do you envision?
  • How will traffic flow around the island and through your kitchen space?
  • How do you prefer to work in your kitchen?
  • How much space do you need to feel comfortable moving around the kitchen?
  • What will the sight lines be like from other rooms?

#5: Style

This is the moment where all that time spent on Pinterest can be helpful. What are the looks that you love? Do you prefer color, or is white more your style? Do you like glass doors or open shelving? Sleek lines or ornate legs? The options are endless.
