What to Consider When Creating a Kosher Kitchen

You are here

Great kitchen design is as much about looks as it is about function, and function becomes even more important when designing a kosher kitchen.

If you keep a kosher kitchen and are ready for a kitchen remodel, there are unique considerations to discuss with your kitchen designer. Here are three key elements to keep in mind as you create a kosher kitchen that looks gorgeous and functions just as beautifully:

Appliances

Doubling up on appliances makes everything easier. With two sinks, two ovens, and two dishwashers, you don’t have to worry as much about keeping foods separate. Talk with your kitchen designer about how much space these appliances will occupy, and consider if you’re willing to give up kitchen cabinetry for that extra appliance. If space or budget is an issue, you might opt for the extra sink but forego the extra dishwasher in favor of more storage space, depending on what’s most significant to you.

If you keep the tradition of refraining from working and using electronics on the Sabbath, talk to your designer about STARK-K kosher friendly appliances. Their refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers have an energy-saving component often referred to as “Sabbath Mode.”

Storage

Storage space is a common issue for many homeowners, and it can be even more challenging when you’re maintaining a kosher kitchen -- you need storage for at least two sets of dishes (and maybe more, for formal occasions and Passover), plus double the silverware, glassware, and pot/pan storage. Take inventory of what you’ll need to store in your kitchen, and let your designer know.

Countertops

To avoid contamination of your cooking space, choose a countertop that has a hard, nonporous surface with no cracks. Kashering your kitchen is also easier when you have hard surfaces. Avoid kitchen materials such as wood and quartz countertops and opt for granite, marble, or stainless steel.

Nice blog! Appliances, countertops and cabinets, these are the life of a kitchen that are very important parts of the kitchen that is used daily and which makes our work in the kitchen easy and efficient.
A tiled segment of wall or floor can also make a huge difference to your kitchen and add a bit of life to it. Great article!
