Custom Kitchens: Tips for Calculating your Budget

You are here

custom kitchens on a budget

It’s official- you’ve decided to take the plunge and remodel your kitchen! However, before you embark on your dream kitchen journey, it’s important to go into the project with a realistic view of how much you can spend on your renovation. Creating a budget for your custom kitchen design (and sticking to it!) is a great way to make sure you keep your spending on track with no hidden surprises.

Here are a few useful tips for calculating your budget before your custom kitchen remodel begins.

Understand the total cost

Sure, it’s easy to get a quote from your kitchen designer and price new appliances, light fixtures, and materials, but the underlying costs of a kitchen remodel is what will trip you up if you’re not paying attention. Be prepared by budgeting a recommended 10-20% of the value of your home for your kitchen renovation.

Stick to your guns

Once you have decided on the amount you are willing to spend on your custom kitchen remodel, stick with that number, regardless of how tempted you become. It is easy to get your head turned by all the glamorous design options and state-of-the-art appliances on the market today, but it is important to stay within your original budget without going over to avoid overspending.

Plan for the unexpected

You know the saying, “Life happens while you’re making other plans?” Unfortunately, it holds true for home renovation projects too. In order to avoid a serious financial calamity, it is wise to set aside 20 percent of your kitchen remodel budget to cover any unforeseen costs or surprises that may arise during the renovation process.

Factor in renovation-related expenses

There are many things to consider once you decide to renovate your kitchen. Make sure you ask yourself these important questions before you get started:

  • Are we going to have to stay in a hotel or move into an apartment while the kitchen is undergoing the renovation?
  • Are there any pets that will need to be boarded in order to be away from the stress-inducing noise and dust?
  • Is there money budgeted for frequent take-out and restaurant meals while the kitchen is out of commission?

All of these costs can add up quickly- something you should take into consideration when sketching out your kitchen renovation budget.
